Flavours and festivities mark Portugal Day in eMalahleni

This weekend’s Portuguese Day celebration was one for the books as the Portuguese community keeps heritage alive.

The Portuguese community came out in full force this past weekend, turning an ordinary Saturday into a vibrant celebration of culture.

While the official observation of Portugal Day fell on June 10, the local community chose June 13 to gather for the festivities.

The atmosphere was electric, with the aromas of traditional Portuguese cuisine filling the air.

The food tables were laden with authentic dishes, including caldo verde soup, grilled chicken, and the famous Portuguese tripe dish, dobrada, bringing a true taste of Portugal to eMalahleni.

Beyond the food, colourful décor, and lively entertainment, the gathering served a deeper purpose: honouring the historic roots of the Portuguese community.

Officially known as Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas, the celebration commemorates the death of the legendary poet, Luís de Camões.

Celebrating the day in such style ensures that the younger generation remains connected to their traditional heritage.

In his speech, Portuguese Club board member Johnny Quiterres thanked the organisers for the beautifully decorated hall and the hard work that went into setting up the event.

He extended a special word of appreciation to the club’s president, Jose Moniz, and his wife, Lizzy, noting that they went well beyond the extra mile.

Johnny also thanked the community for their support, after which an auction was held to raise funds for the club’s ongoing maintenance.

“Celebrating the day in such style ensures that the younger generation remains connected to their traditional heritage,” Johnny added.
