Guard shot, attackers flee empty-handed at Ga-Nala
Cases of attempted armed robbery and attempted murder have been opened, and the suspects remain on the run.
Kriel police have opened cases of attempted armed robbery and attempted murder following a failed cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery at a local shopping centre in Ga-Nala, where a security guard was shot and injured.
According to police, the incident occurred on 29 June, when a security team arrived at the shopping centre to replenish cash at an automated teller machine (ATM).
Police said an unconfirmed number of armed suspects ambushed the security officers while they were loading cash. The suspects allegedly overpowered the guards, disarmed them, and seized a cash container.
However, the robbery was unsuccessful after the suspects discovered they could not open the high-security cash canister. They abandoned the container without taking any money and fled the scene.
Before escaping, the suspects opened fire, injuring one of the security guards. The wounded officer was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
The suspects remain at large, and police have launched an investigation.
