Shacks and shops burnt and looted in Old Coronation
Police confirmed four arrests as investigations continue.
An estimated 10 to 15 shacks and tuck shops were destroyed during a night of violence in Old Coronation, with property looted and four suspects arrested following police intervention.
According to police, reports of fires on June 30, prompted an immediate response by officers and members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). On arrival, security forces allegedly came under attack as stones were thrown by a hostile crowd.
Police fired rubber bullets to disperse the group after officers were reportedly attacked.
The crowd later regrouped, with about 150 people allegedly moving through the settlement, setting fire to shacks and tuck shops.
During the chaos, household property, including televisions and refrigerators, was reportedly stolen from some of the affected structures.
