Segen Films production set to shine at National Arts Festival

eMalahleni-based Segen Films is showcasing its latest theatre production, Uchawi - Where Ancient Spirits Awaken, at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.

A bold new Segen Films theatre production from the City of Coal is set to take to the stage at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, showcasing local talent on one of South Africa’s most prestigious arts platforms. Uchawi – Where Ancient Spirits Awaken will be performed from July 1 to 4 as part of the festival programme.

The production is a powerful and emotionally charged drama that explores themes of inheritance, belonging, and desire, revealing how family divisions can be shaped by secrets, rejection, and generations of unresolved pain.

Beneath the themes of witchcraft and religious beliefs, the production tells the story of two brothers caught in a battle fuelled by the past, while mothers fight to secure their sons’ futures and old wounds refuse to heal.

Directed by Malik Mashinin and Zintle Masango, the production features dramaturgy by Mandla Masilela, choreography by Sbusiso Skosana, and stage management by Archie Makuru.
The cast includes Sbusiso Mabena, Nicole Kgwete, Romeo Dube, and Bongekile Mnisi.
The production team said they are honoured to have been selected to perform at the National Arts Festival.

“It is the first time for us to be part of the National Arts Festival, and we feel amazing. It is a wonderful opportunity, and we are honoured to be among the productions selected to perform there,” Makuru said.

The team believes the production will showcase the depth of artistic talent in eMalahleni.

“We want to show that eMalahleni has so much talent. This is a new production, but it has already reached the national stage. We have worked very hard to get here, and everyone involved has given their all.”
