Kopanang and Curro boys learn about careers in engineering

The learners were taken through the different career paths within the engineering sector.

Matric boys from Kopanang Secondary School and Curro Bankenveld formed part of a ‘Take a Boy Child to Work’ initiative aimed at enlightening them about diverse career paths within the engineering sector.

Hosted on June 19 by an engineering company based in Middelburg under the theme ‘Today he observes, tomorrow he leads’, the initiative included 18 future leaders who were selected to participate.

“This initiative matters because it gives boys the space to be seen, heard, guided, and encouraged,” said Bongumusa Mashazi from the company.

During the event, which formed part of the broader ‘Take a Child to Work’ programme, the learners engaged directly with different personnel, from leadership teams to artisans in the workshop, while also gaining exposure to critical support functions.

“This holistic experience enabled participants to make informed subject choices, understand the breadth of opportunities in engineering, and connect with mentors who embody professional excellence,” said Bongumusa.

Beyond career exposure, the programme reinforced values of equality, social responsibility, and corporate citizenship, contributing meaningfully to tackling youth unemployment and preparing the next generation for success.

“The learners showed so much enthusiasm, and they were interacting with the staff from various fields. They were also comfortable enough to ask questions which showed that they were interested in the career paths that they discovered,” the employee said.
