Over a cup of tea – Makua wants to ‘Let Her Grow’
This year’s event marks the 10th year of her journey with women, around a table, and over a cup of tea.
Masechaba Makua, from the dusty streets of Hlalanikahle in Kwa-Guqa, has built her life around vision, community, and faith. She is one of the few young women who owns her own branding equipment and manages a marketing, branding and events business.
These ventures include indoor, outdoor, and travel events designed to bring people together.
Her community work is just as important.
Through her non-profit organisation, the Zama Foundation for Communities, she has given hope to many in the City of Coal. After the Covid-19 pandemic, Makua prepared warm meals for job seekers.
Today, her foundation focuses on training and skills programmes, helping people gain opportunities and confidence. Makua’s passion for inspiring women started in high school, where she organised women’s empowerment high teas
“I was in grade 10 when God put the heart for women’s empowerment in me. I would use my own pocket money to fund the event, and it got me in trouble with my mother, but she eventually supported my vision and understood that it is not just fun, but God’s purpose for my life. My mother, who is a teacher, is the biggest support system for my initiative,” Makua said.
She believes upliftment is not about making women dominant, but about giving them the strength to stand firmly. “It’s the key to allowing women to have an opinion and to have both feet on the ground, so much so that no one can pull the carpet from under their feet,” she said.
She dreams of seeing women succeed in their fields and work together rather than compete. She is also a law student and a woman of faith. Born again and devoted to the Lord, she values simplicity, believing that ‘a simple life is a beautiful life’.
This year, Makua will host the 10th annual ‘Invitation to a cup of tea’, which is themed ‘Let Her Grow’.
The event will take place on August 22 at the eMalahleni City Hall. The programme will feature respected voices, including Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng and Connie Ferguson as keynote speakers, and Tshepiso Phosa as a guest speaker.
Together, they will share insights on growth, resilience, and empowerment. For Makua, ‘Let Her Grow’ is her mission to see women rise, stand firm, and flourish.
