Knife threat at church: eMalahleni Court postpones case

The matter has been postponed for further investigation.

The case against a man accused of threatening a 71-year-old worshipper with a knife during an Easter church service has been postponed once again.

The accused appeared in the eMalahleni Magistrate’s Court on June 24, where the matter was postponed to July 8 for further investigation.

This follows an earlier court appearance on April 22, when the case was also postponed. He remains out on bail of R500.

The charges stem from an incident on April 4, when what should have been a peaceful church service allegedly descended into panic and confusion.

According to the victim, Elizabeth Sikeli, the accused confronted her before the service.

She alleged he followed and pushed her while she was walking to church with fellow congregants.

She ignored the incident and continued to the service.

The situation allegedly escalated during the service. “I was praying when I suddenly felt something cold against my neck. It was a knife,” Sikeli said at the time.

Congregants reportedly acted swiftly, overpowering and restraining the suspect before anyone was seriously injured.

Sikeli alleged that the man made several attempts to stab her, but she escaped unharmed.
