Hitchhikers robbed at gunpoint on R555

The friends were trying to get a ride to Kwa-Guqa, but ended up being robbed of all their belongings.

A group of friends’ hitchhiking trip turned into a nightmare that left them robbed of all their belongings.

According to the police, the incident occurred on July 11 at around 21:30 when the friends were hitchhiking to Kwa-Guqa.

One of the men told the police that a Renault Triber stopped to offer them a lift.

Moments into the trip, one of occupants reportedly pointed a firearm at them, demanding all of their belongings.

After complying, the victims were then ordered out of the vehicle, which sped off soon afterward.

A case was opened at the Witbank SAPS, and investigations are underway.

The SAPS has warned the public against hitchhiking because, although it may seem like a convenient option, it poses significant safety risks.

“Hitchhiking and offering lifts to strangers are dangerous. Think twice before putting yourself in a situation that may pose a safety risk,” the SAPS said. “Consider accessible alternatives to hitchhiking. With a little patience, you will often be able to find at least one safe option, such as reliable public transport.”
