Big dreams ahead for Giant Saints Centre as founder appeals for support
Giant Saints Centre seeks a bigger home for children in its care.
A new chapter of hope could be unfolding for the Giant Saints Centre as the organisation looks toward expanding its facilities to better serve children and people living with disabilities.
The centre received a visit from the speaker of the Emalahleni Local Municipality, Millicent Shabangu, on July 22, when food parcels, blankets, clothing and sanitary pads were handed over to support the work being done at the centre.
For its founder, Cate Wakatsiyane, the support was an emotional moment and a sign that bigger things are possible for the centre, which currently accommodates 18 children, including some who are still learning and receiving care.
With tears of joy, Wakatsiyane expressed her gratitude while making a plea for further assistance to help turn her dream of a larger and improved centre into a reality.
“We are not disabled; we are able. We can do everything when we are given love, support and opportunities,” Wakatsiyane said.
She said the centre was born out of a calling to serve people with disabilities and that the journey has not been easy. “Before we had this centre, we worked from a garage and a back room. With the help of God we have reached this point, but there is still a lot more we want to do.”
Wakatsiyane said her biggest wish was to see the centre grow into a larger facility where more children could receive proper care, learning opportunities and support.
The centre has also received a commitment of support from the Department of Correctional Services, which indicated that parolees could assist with construction and other projects to improve the facility.
“When we received the request, we decided to extend a helping hand. We brought food, sanitary pads and blankets, and we will continue looking at ways we can assist. This work requires special care, and we are here because we love our community,” said Shabangu. “My heart is warm after seeing what is happening here.”
