IEC gives voters a final chance to register before deadline

The IEC has issued a final reminder to eligible voters to register or update their details before the deadline, with online and WhatsApp options available ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

The Electoral Commission (IEC) is urging South Africans who have not yet registered to vote or updated their details to act before voter registration closes at midnight on Friday, August 7.

Eligible voters who missed the registration weekends can still use the IEC’s Online Voter Registration portal or the newly introduced WhatsApp registration service to complete the process.

WhatsApp portal features

The WhatsApp platform allows voters to register or update their information using identity verification, document uploads, address confirmation and voting station verification.

The IEC reminded citizens that accurate address details are important to ensure they are assigned to the correct voting station.

The commission urged citizens not to wait until the last minute, as high demand close to deadlines can place pressure on registration systems.
