More than 80 elderly athletes from the eMalahleni sub-region travelled to Middelburg to represent the city at the district level of the Golden Games.

The games, held on July 30, brought together six sub-regions to compete in various activities, such as athletics, ball relay, soccer and duck walk.

Nehemia Mtsweni, one of the athletes who participated, said the event was a great success.

“Everything went well, and we are now looking forward to the provincial level, which will be held in Mbombela on August 19,” Mtsweni said.

Gaining momentum

He commended the participants for the incredible improvement they continue to show each year.

“Each year we’re gaining momentum. When we started back then, it used to be sluggish, but year by year there’s been great improvement, and we are gaining momentum,” he said.

Promoting active ageing

Mtsweni stressed the importance of the elderly participating in the Golden Games to keep them healthy and active.

“The Golden Games were initiated to promote active ageing, social inclusion, and healthy lifestyles among elderly people aged 60 and above,” he said.
