eMalahleni police investigate three separate attacks on women

Police urge men to refrain from forcing themselves on women, while advising that women should always stay vigilant.

Witbank SAPS have launched investigations into three separate cases of gender-based violence following a series of alarming attacks on eMalahleni women.

In the first incident, which reportedly occurred on October 8, a woman reported an uncomfortable encounter she had with a client at her workplace in eMalahleni.

She told the police that as she explained a service process to the male client, he allegedly touched her breasts and chest without her consent.

Two days later, another woman alleged that she was assaulted by her boyfriend who forced his way into her home around midnight.

The woman further alleged that the man started shouting and making death threats, before allegedly raping her.

Another disturbing incident occurred on October 13 in which a woman said she was abducted by four men in a silver Volkswagen Polo while walking along Foxglove Street in Tasbet Park.

She said the men drove around with her until they stopped, pulled her out of the car, and attempted to rape her.

However, she managed to escape after stabbing one of the men with an object she had picked up from the vehicle as he tried to unzip his pants. The men caught her before she could find help and again drove around with her.

She took another opportunity to escape by biting the tongue of a second man who tried to kiss her. When another man attacked her, she struck him with the object she still held and ran away as soon as they stopped the car.

No arrests have been made so far, and police investigations are underway.

Warrant Officer David Ratau from the station said men must refrain from forcing themselves on women, either by raping them or touching them inappropriately. He also advised women to always be vigilant.

“Try to walk in pairs or in groups. If you notice anything suspicious, call for help immediately,” Ratau said. “If, however, you do find yourself in such a position, do your best to stay calm and do as the attackers tell you to save your life.”
