Charges mount as alleged eMalahleni serial rapist stands trial in High Court

Activists and affected families gather in Middelburg as the state expands the indictment against Cascar Nkosi to 31 counts.

The trial of alleged serial rapist Cascar Nkosi (39) continues today in the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Middelburg, following a major escalation in charges during yesterday’s proceedings.

Kwanele-Mama Foundation chairperson Vinolia Mashiane described the session as long and emotional for the affected families and community members present.

“Yesterday’s court session was very long and heavy to endure as statements were read into the record. At one point, we had to take a break because people were so emotional with all they were hearing, especially seeing the prosecution increase the charges from an initial indictment of 26 counts to 31. Nkosi pleaded guilty to only three charges: common assault, assault GBH, and the violation of a protection order – all pertaining to his ex-wife,” Mashiane said.

The charges include multiple counts of rape and kidnapping involving children aged between seven and 13, alongside separate counts of rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

Nkosi has remained in custody since his arrest in January 2025. He was arrested while attending court in Vosman for an unrelated assault case.

His arrest followed investigations linking him to at least 10 reported cases of sexual assault and abduction across eMalahleni, and Mhluzi, dating back to 2023.

As the trial continues, activists and affected families are watching proceedings closely as the case unfolds this week.

“We remain hopeful that justice will be served, and we are very thankful for all the support we are receiving,” Mashiane added.
