The property on which the water uses are applied for is Portion 4 of the farm Middeldrift 42 IS.
The site is accessible off R547 near Amandla Primary School, 8 km north of Ga-Nala (Kriel). UCDIV is the holder of the Mining Right for the existing and operational New Clydesdale Colliery (NCC), which is a coal mine involving opencast and underground mining, and processing of coal for supply to Eskom and the export market.
The application is mainly for water uses associated with opencast mining of a pan wetland, pumping water from the pit into an existing Pollution Control Dam, and backfilling the pit with overburden material.
The water uses applied for are defined in section 21 of the National Water Act, 1998 as follows:
– Section 21(a): Taking water from a water resource.
– Section 21(c): Impeding or diverting the flow of water in a watercourse.
– Section 21 (g): Disposing of waste in a manner which may detrimentally impact on a water resource.
– Section 21(i): Altering the bed, banks, course or characteristics of a watercourse.
– Section 21(j): Removing, discharging or disposing of water found underground if it is necessary for the efficient continuation of an activity or for the safety of people.
