NOTICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORISATION APPLICATION PROCESS FOR THE PROPOSED UNATHI HIGH VOLTAGE SWITCHING STATION IN MHLUZI TOWNSHIP, MIDDELBURG, STEVE TSHWETE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY
Notice is hereby given of a public participation process in terms of Chapter 6 of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations, 2014 (as amended), promulgated under the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998).
ACTIVITY
Steve Tshwete Local Municipality proposes to construct the Unathi High Voltage Switching Station adjacent to the existing Middelburg Substation on ERF 10130, Mhluzi, Middelburg, within Steve Tshwete Local Municipality of Nkangala District Municipality, Mpumalanga Province. The proposed project entails:
•Construction of High Voltage Switching Station covering an area a 1.26 ha adjacent to the existing Middelburg Substation.
– Construction of approximately 0.14 km of 88 kV overhead powerline connecting the proposed switching station to the existing Middelburg-Groblersdal 2 Line through a Loop-In Loop-Out configuration.
•Installation of associated electrical infrastructure, including:
– 88KV equipment of Current Transformers (CTs);
– Voltage Transformers (VTs);
– Power Voltage Transformers;
– Surge Arresters;
– Circuit Breakers; and
– Isolators.
APPLICATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORISATION
Environmental Authorisation is required in terms of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 (as amended), under the following listed activities of Listing Notice 1 (GNR 327 of 2014, as amended):
* Activity 11: Construction of approximately 0.14 km of 88 kV overhead powerline connecting the proposed switching station to the existing transmission line.
* Activity 27: Clearance of approximately 1.26 hectare of indigenous vegetation for the construction of the proposed switching station.

Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) are invited to register and submit written comments regarding the proposed project. The Draft Basic Assessment Report (DBAR) and supporting documentation is available for public review for the duration of the public participation period. Registrations and written comments should reach our offices on or/ before 10/08/2026. Please be aware that any information supplied by I&APs becomes public knowledge unless requested to remain confidential.
