Edwin’s heart lies in his swing
Edwin Compton is a local golfing enthusiast that goes that extra mile to bring golf to the children of eMalahleni.

Edwin himself started playing golf at the late age of 15 years old, he took to the course and his first shot hit the sweet spot, soaring down the middle of the fairway. He quickly elevated his handicap from 8 to a 3 by the time he finished Matric.
But it wasn’t all glitz and glamour for Edwin, and golf for him was a financial handicap at first, “It’s not easy getting the right clubs and kit, and it all works out to be quite expensive,” said Edwin.
This motivated him to join the South African Golf Development Board.
“My passion for golf drives me to work hard on the board, trying to bridge the financial gap, growing the game,” he added.
Edwin is part of the team that coach underprivileged children, he is currently the Mpumalanga manager and is responsible for employing coaches from all over the province, assisting him here in eMalahleni is Victor Mashile.
Under Victor’s wing are 60 children from the various sub-urban areas surrounding eMalahleni, of these 60 children 12 have excelled quickly and are well on their way to earning their handicaps.

“The kids play weekly at Greenside Golf Course, coached by our regional coach Stephan Watt,” added Edwin. Thanks to Greenside Golf Club the kids received free membership and their weekly green fees are free. The 12 children are set to take part in the Mpumalanga Junior Tournament to be held at Tweefontein Golf Club in the coming weeks.
In his spare time when not coaching the children, Edwin likes to spend his afternoons at Bankenveld Golf Course as a qualified PGA teaching pro, he also enjoys his music and is a praise and worship leader at Michurch Heritage of Faith.
