Ryan makes it two in a row at Tweefontein.

Ryan Stenzel from Witbank Golf Club won the Tweefontein Junior Golf open for the second year in a row.

On Sunday March 2, the 36-hole event was played in the rain and on a very wet course. A large field of 62 juniors played this year and it was pleasing to see that nine players from the golf development also participated.

Ryan played a 78 in the morning, but closed with a well-played 73 in the afternoon to win by just one stroke on 151. Joint second were Erik Coetzee and Banele Mavuso who both finished on 152. Erik won the count out.

In the B division Zandre Storm was the winner on 160. Lucas Ruf was second on 170 and in third place was Reinhardt Coetzee on 174. The C Division was won by Calvin Mahlangu who made 51 points with Charmain Mashile second on 38 points.

Thanks to the management and staff of the Tweefontein Golf Club and members of the Mpumalanga Junior golf committee for hosting a wonderful event. Thanks also to Tweefontein and Impunzi Complexes who sponsored the food and prizes for this junior event and to Vincent Tshabalala who conducted the prize giving.

Triston Lawrence a junior golfer from Nelspruit, also made it two in a row, when he became the first golfer in 36 years to win the South African Amateur Championship in two consecutive years. Last year he won this tournament and became the youngest winner in the 122-year history of this tournament in Johannesburg.

This year he won at Hermanus , winning the final 5 and 4 against Altin van der Merwe. Triston has played junior golf since the age of 7 in Mpumalanga and although he is still just 17, he now plays in the senior amateur events and also played in the SA Open in December, as an amateur alongside Charl Schwartzel.

The next junior tournament will be the SA u.19 championships at Umhlali in Kwa-Zulu Natal from March 31 to April 5. Mpumalanga has entered eight players and the Golf Development Board wishes them good luck in the tournament.
The next domestic event will be the Highveld Open to be held at Walker Park on Sunday, April 13. Entries for this tournament close on Thursday, April 10 and can be made online.

The Golf Development Board wants to invite all junior golfers, boys and girls who are at school and under the age of 19 to come and play in the Mpumalanga junior events. The only requirement is that players must have an official handicap.
