WATCH: Alkanstrand beach rehabilitation on track

Dredging continues at Alkantstrand amid ongoing efforts to ensure beach is ready for the festive season

Amid a temporary closure at Alkantstrand, ongoing rehabilitation and replenishment work is on track, says Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).

ZO consultant editor Dave Savides filmed Ilembe hard at work dredging on Monday morning, with the dredge spoil being deposited onto Palm Beach via the pipeline.

Rehabilitation efforts have seen the Port of Richards Bay teams transporting rocks from the South Dunes precinct in recent weeks and placing them at the base of geo sandbags along the shoreline.

This temporary barrier offers immediate protection to vital beach facilities, including the lifeguard house, which was previously at serious risk of collapse.

Dennis Mqadi, port manager at the Port of Richards Bay said, “We are proud of the strides made in restoring Alkanstrand. While critical milestones have been achieved, work continues with dredging and sand replenishment to ensure the beach is ready for the festive season.”

The final phase of the project has begun, focusing on reshaping and reinforcing the shoreline through continued dredging, sand replenishment, and the construction of a coffer dam to manage dredged materials, supported by imported sand to enhance beach stability.
