Hillside Aluminium joins forces with local municipalities to deliver water infrastructure

R5.1-million water infrastructure project delivered to the Mbongampisi community in uMfolozi

Following years of water supply challenges and relying on water tankers, residents of Mbongampisi in uMfolozi now have access to clean running water closer to home.

South32 Hillside Aluminium, in partnership with the uMfolozi Local Municipality and King Cetshwayo District Municipality (KCDM), recently handed over the R5.1-million infrastructure project to the community.

The project included the construction of 21 communal standpipes, excavation, installation, and backfilling of 4 300 metres of pipeline, the installation of a 30kVA diesel generator with a control panel, a water storage tank, and a pump house.

KCDM municipal manager Philani Sibiya said the community had, for years, depended on unreliable water tankers, often going without water for days.

“Through our partnership with South32, we have now delivered sustainable water infrastructure to these households close to their homes,” said Sibiya.

The infrastructure has been described as a major step in improving access to clean and reliable water for approximately 65 households, benefiting more than 520 residents.

Acting vice president of operations at South32 Hillside Aluminium, Muzi Ndaba, added, “This project is about restoring dignity, improving health outcomes, and creating opportunities for the people of Mbongampisi to thrive.

“Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, and we are proud to contribute to a lasting solution for this community.”
