City of uMhlathuze cracks down on illegal activities in CBDs
uMhlathuze tackles illegal hawking, undocumented persons and illegal mechanical workshops during Richards Bay and Empangeni blitz
Several suspected illegal traders were removed in a multi-stakeholder blitz conducted in Richards Bay and Empangeni CBDs on Thursday as the City of uMhlathuze enforced its by-laws.
In Richards Bay, the operation focused on illegal hawking, undocumented persons in collaboration with immigration officials, illegal mechanical workshops, and other activities impacting the safety and cleanliness of the city.
In a statement, the municipality said keeping the city clean, safe and well-managed is a collective responsibility.
“We encourage all community members to play their part in maintaining the standards that contribute to a thriving and sustainable city,” reads the statement.

Meanwhile, in Empangeni, city officials conducted a community clean-up campaign within the business district.
“The operation focused on litter picking, tree pruning, the regulation of illegal trading activities and waste management compliance,” said the city.
Several illegal vendors were issued spot fines for non-compliance, while unlawful structures erected in public spaces were dismantled.
Businesses operating within the CBD were also engaged and educated on waste management regulations to promote responsible waste disposal and environmental sustainability.
