City of uMhlathuze residents push fight against coal dust

Residents call on authorities to implement measures to tackle coal dust in the City of uMhlathuze

Despite years of pleas for sterner action against persistent coal dust pollution in the City of uMhlathuze, it continues to pose health and environmental risks.

City residents are now calling on authorities to implement practical measures that minimise the dust plumes blanketing Richards Bay and surrounding areas amid the daily influx of coal trucks.

More than 500 residents have signed an online petition calling for the installation of truck wash-bay facilities, wheel wash systems and effective dust suppression infrastructure at all port entry and exit points.

The wash bay facilities would remove dirt and debris before vehicles enter and exit the port, with dust suppression infrastructure controlling dust at the source.

Speaking to the ZO last week, a Richards Bay resident championing the cause said they hope to engage with port authorities and bulk commodity operators.

“We would hope the wash bays will be installed at the entrance of the port. Initially, the discussion was centred around coal trucks, but it is every vehicle that travels in and out of the port that should get a rinse down,” said Teri Nel.

Health and environmental hazard

Nel said, although plans are in the early phases, it is hoped that local communities will back the cause.

“At the moment, we need the community’s voice because I think many people think we’re running headfirst into a losing battle, but we have to try find a plausible solution,” said Nel.

“I have grown up here; my parents moved here when I was nine months old. I have four children, and when I moved away to the Eastern Cape and then returned, I was shocked. My daughter even asked me, why is the grass dirty?” she said.

One petition signee said, “I signed because every person has the right to clean air and a healthy environment. Coal dust pollution affects our health, our homes, our children and our future. It is time for our voices to be heard and for action to be taken to protect our community.”

Another resident called for strict enforcement of environmental regulations across the city.

“We cannot ignore the impact of coal dust on our health, our environment and future generations. Together we can make a difference.

“Coal dust is settling on our homes, our cars, our gardens and the air we breathe. This is no longer just an inconvenience – it is a serious environmental and public health threat.

“We demand a clean, safe town free from uncontrolled coal dust, proper road cleaning and effective dust-suppression measures.”
