Hermannsburg School

WHERE WELL-BEING NURTURES EDUCATION

Founded in 1856 in the rolling hills of Umvoti KwaZulu-Natal, Hermannsburg is the oldest independent co-educational school in KZN.

Today, that legacy translates into a standard of academic excellence and a global approach to education. Our scholars are taught in a safe, accepting and tolerant Christian environment, with a focus on personal commitment and a well-rounded approach to life.

From the ‘Little Oaks’, starting at Grade RRRR, right through to our Matric programme, the curriculum is developed to provide young adults with real world skills. This holistic approach to education is designed to support scholars as they grow, whether they board or are day scholars.

At Hermannsburg, we believe that well-being nurtures education. Our beautiful 17-hectare campus, lends itself to numerous outdoor pursuits, feeding body, mind and soul. This is supported by the school’s commitment to Positive Education, following the successful PERMA-V model: Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement and Vitality.

Problem-solving and critical thinking are core skills that empower our scholars to achieve their goals, one of which is to matriculate by passing the Independent Examinations Board national senior certificate examination with a Bachelor pass. We offer subjects in the languages, humanities, arts and sciences (including commerce and technology), catering to a wide range of interests and abilities, thus supporting individual talents and dreams.

Boarders are treated to a ‘home away from home experience’, with plenty of comforts in the newly renovated Boarding Establishments. Day scholars from the surrounds have the option of using the school’s new fleet of busses, daily.

Hermannsburg’s Lutheran Christian ethos is a foundation that all our scholars can experience and choose to embrace. Strong ties to Germany also offer unique opportunities for tertiary study as well as job prospects locally and abroad.

Our sport department offers a range of different sporting activities, including professional PGA golf coaching, mountain biking and trail running. The combination of a peaceful setting and plenty of exercise ensures our scholars are well-prepared for each academic day.

Alongside sport, the afternoon programme sees scholars engaged in cultural activities such as debating, choir, chapel band, brass band and more. Music has a proud history at the school and is offered as a subject.

Be it in the classroom, online, on the sports field or around the campus, our teachers emphasise ‘connection over content’, ensuring our scholars are equipped to fulfil their potential, and become well adjusted, contributing leaders in our society.
