Residents rally for safer road

Call for speed humps in Kerk Street

EMPANGENI residents have started a petition requesting that speed bumps be erected in Kerk Street in desperate hope of eradicating the danger of speeding drivers.

Bronwyn Robinson has been a witness – and victim – of countless accidents along the street and has taken action in submitting a petition requesting the speed bumps.

After countless calls to the municipality, Robinson finally got in touch with Andre Schutte, the Manager of the Urban Roads and Rail Sidings for the City of uMhlathuze, who stated that a letter of motivation and a signed petition of no fewer than 50 petitioners is a necessity.

According to Marita van Heerden of Metric Pools, ‘The lack of patience from drivers is terrible. This road really needs bumps’. Residents and business owners are especially concerned with the safety of school pupils, as Empangeni High and Empangeni Preparatory pupils use both the roads and are constantly at risk when crossing the road.

‘There are cars that drive up this road so fast, it’s absolute kamikaze stuff’, said Elize White of Hollywood bets.net

In four days, Robinson managed to get 82 petition signatures and has forwarded the documents, which will take between one to two months to get the ball rolling.

‘Each town has bumps on the main road, except Rex Henderson where drivers come speeding down the road and turn off into Kerk where workers and customers are reversing out of parking areas and become victims of collisions,’ a frequent user of the road complained.

‘With all this happening we have the police who sit on the hill beside the road and are seemingly more interested in trapping to get money than they are about the safety of locals.’
