WHAT caused a normally mild-mannered eSikhaleni policeman to shoot and kill his colleague and a female resident in the Port Durnford area on Thursday night?
That’s the question stunned members at the station were asking as they heard the news when reporting for work on Friday morning.
The details were sketchy, but according to members who rushed to the scene, a duty constable from the station had been accompanied by an off-duty warrant officer and they drove together in a police van to the area.
Residents at a homestead reportedly heard a vehicle at around 10.30pm, saw the policemen alight and witnessed the warrant officer fire a number of bullets at the constable, who collapsed against the vehicle.
The warrant officer then allegedly entered a home and shot a female victim in the chest.
A message was reportedly sent on the police radio system, claiming the van had been ambushed.
Members tracked the vehicle and rushed to the scene, where residents informed them what had happened.
The warrant officer was arrested and held in the Empangeni cells.
It is not known when and where he will appear in court.
