ALTHOUGH not actively part of the anti-rhino poaching programme, two units of the SA National Defence Force are carrying out leadership training in the iMfolozi Game Reserve.
Reserve Force non-commissioned officers from 84 Signal Unit and Natal Carbineers, under the command of Lt Col Ken Lowe are undergoing the training in various tactical operations including patrols and manning of roadblocks and observation points throughout the reserve.
The arrangements for the training has the blessing of the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (EKZNW) CEO, Dr Bandile Mkhize.
It is expected that the presence of the soldiers will enhance the anti-poaching efforts of Ezemvelo adding manpower to the effort.
The soldiers being accompanied by EKZNW rangers has an added benefit in that they can learn vital tracking skills.
Most of the reservists are unemployment, but the commitment shown is encouraging as they make the military their career, albeit on a part time basis.
The 10-day training programme will continue until Sunday, 20 October.
