4 Richards Bay swimmers excel at Oceans8 open water challenge

Four Froggies Aquatics swimmers raised funds for NSRI at Durban's Oceans8 swim, securing top podium finishes in tough conditions.

FOUR intrepid Froggies Aquatics swimmers took the plunge for charity last weekend, when they took part in the Oceans8 charity open water swim in Durban.

The annual two-day event saw over 2 800 miles swum by 598 participants, with more than 20 charities the beneficiaries of the R1.5m raised.

Entrants had the choice of distances: the 4-milers swam 2 miles per day; the 8-milers did 4 miles on day 1 and 4 miles on day 2; and the 16-milers, 8 miles on day 1 and 8 miles on day 2.

It was a particularly tough challenge for the 16-milers, who had to complete a double mile in under 75 minutes.

With the NSRI their chosen charity, the Froggies quartet fared well, with coach Wendy Cook, taking part for the second consecutive year, leading the way.

Swimming the 16 miles, Wendy took second place in her category, while Heather Tiltman claimed the top spot in her 8-mile class.

Leane Botha also claimed a category first place in her 8 miles, and Morne Botha also swam the 8 miles, taking 2nd place in his age category.

“What a phenomenal event for such a great cause!” said coach Wendy.

“On the first day, the conditions were a bit rough, but day two brought perfect conditions. The glory is not ours but the Lord’s. We were truly blessed to participate.”
