Setting the Cancer record straight

Spreading the word about Cancer on World Cancer Day

EMPANGEN CANSA organisation spent World Cancer Day at the Empangeni Sanlam Centre ‘Debunking the Myths’ about Cancer.

uThungulu CANSA Regional Manager Aletta Williams and Sanlam Centre Marketing Manager Precious Ntuli hosted an exhibition at the shopping centre and handed out educational pamphlets on the myths and facts about cancer.

‘There are a lot of myths and facts about cancer and our aim is to spread the truth and inform people who are diagnosed on how CANSA is able to support and show care for cancer patients,’ said Williams.

Having made a trip to the Richards Bay Oncology Centre to share a message of hope with patients receiving treatment, Williams explained the necessity of a solid support system and balanced lifestyle.

‘Basic tips include avoiding direct sunlight between 10am and 3pm, apply sunscreen regularly according to your skin type, wear protective clothing and UV protective swimwear especially in the Zululand heat. Check your skin regularly too,’ she said.

CANSA deals with early detection and offers affordable testing at the Helen Ludwig Care Centre in Empangeni.

‘We offer pap smears and PSA protein testing.

‘Due to a lack of facilities in the rural areas, a large number of people live with the condition and are unaware. We offer vouchers, which I urge residents to purchase for their domestic workers as a gift. It could save someone’s life,’ she said.

If you would like to get involved or go for testing contact CANSA on 035 772 5677.
