Cyclist killed on St Lucia road

UPDATE: Cyclists collide on R618 near St Lucia

ACCORDING to Colonel Mngomezulu, Station Commander at Mtubatuba SAP, the two cyclists collided and it was not a hit and run accident as previously reported.

Col Mngomezulu was at the scene last night and confirmed Andrew Zaloumis was knocked off his bike and landed off the road, the tour guide was knocked off his bike and fell into the road.

A bakkie hit the man first, followed by a BMW. Both drivers stopped at the scene and Mtubatuba SAP obtained the details of both drivers.

The accident is under investigation and a case of culpable homicide has been opened, however, it will be up to the prosecutor to decide which driver will be charged. *The deceased man’s name has been withheld until his family has been notified.

A YOUNG  cyclist  was killed when a car ploughed into him on the main road between Mtuba and St Lucia yesterday evening.

In a statement released by Terri Castis from iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority, it was confirmed the cyclist, a local tour guide and Andrew Zaloumis, CEO of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority were cycling at about 7pm, when the men were involved in the hit and run accident.

It is believed both men were hit by the car which fled the scene.

Zaloumis is receiving treatment for his injuries and underwent an operation on his jaw early this morning. He is stable and is expected to make a full recovery’. Mtubatuba SAPS are investigating a culpable homicide case.
