Spread cancer awareness

Cancer survivor Pepina Khan urges community to support cancer awareness initiatives

RICHARDS Bay cancer survivor Pepina Khan believes making cancer literature more available in rural areas, schools, places of work and at community events can boost cancer awareness.

She was speaking in light of World Cancer Day and Sun Smart Skin Cancer Awareness Month which are commemorated in February.

These health awareness days brought back memories of her personal struggle of being diagnosed with stomach cancer in May 2009.

And she sympathised with all those who are dealing with this dreaded illness.

She has been involved in community events such as the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) Shavathons, Cuppa4cansa and Relay for Life Walks and urges the community to get involved in these fundraising events.

‘When I was told I had cancer, I immediately thought of death and felt my life come to a standstill.

‘I could not deal with it and was extremely depressed, but thanks to my family, friends and my husband Farouk, they pulled me through that terrible ordeal.

‘My motto in life is to always try my best to help people.

‘I believe that if I make one person smile a day, it’s an achievement.

‘So I could not stay down for too long, and my word of encouragement to those suffering with this illness is to be strong, have faith and never give up, even when times get tough.’

Support

Being involved in the Cancer Support Group in Richards Bay has been a vital part of Khan’s recovery.

‘The group is a network of supportive individuals who care for each other and we have motivational speakers and pamper sessions which offer much comfort during our stressful times.

‘We meet on a monthly basis at Netcare The Bay Hospital and I found it helps to talk to others about your experience as the more support you have just makes the battle easier to fight.’
