Here comes the health train

The Phelophepa Health train medical team will be providing service in Mtubatuba and Empangeni this month

IF you suffer from dental, eye or general health issues and need counselling or advise on health matters, help is on the way.

The Phelophepa Healthcare Train, known as ‘the train of hope’, will be in Mtubatuba on 24 to 28 February, and in Empangeni from 10 to 21 March.

With more than 40 permanent staff and numerous volunteers, the train is more than a mobile hospital.

It provides out-reach and educational programmes and has thus far helped 14.5 million people and delivered more than 500 000 pairs of eye-glasses since it rolled out in 1994.

The two unique trains operate as mobile healthcare clinics, bringing much needed medical and educational services to impoverished rural areas.

Health education, dental screening, eye tests and counselling will be provided for free, while dental procedures cost between R5 and R15 and glasses from R30.

Thousands of patients have been helped over the years by the train’s professional nurses and doctors who provide vital health care.
