Wake up call of destruction!

Lucky escape as bakkie ploughs into house

IT was truly a case of ‘things that go bump in the night’ for an Arboretum resident who awoke in the early hours of this morning to a bakkie bashing into his bedroom.

Pensioner Ben Storm was sleeping peacefully in his flatlet, at the back of a home in Arboretum, when the vehicle crashed through the perimeter wall and smashed through the gate, door and wall of his room before coming to a halt.

‘I heard all the noise and looked up to see bricks and glass flying all over. I didn’t know what was going on,’ said Ben.

‘Another couple of metres towards the bed and I could have been killed.’

The commotion also woke the other home occupants, who thought it was a break-in.

They were amazed to see the trail of destruction.

The large bakkie, driven by a young man, had left the main road behind the house, mounted the kerb and sped through 50 metres of green belt, dodging trees, before coming into contact with the premises shortly before 4am.

The vehicle’s airbags saved him from serious injury but the bakkie is a write-off.

The house also suffered serious structural damage.

Police attended the scene.
