THIS week proved to be a highlight in the life of 42-year-old disabled Musawenkosi (Musa) Sikhakhane from Ireland Section, Mandeni, when he received the keys to his house from the Mandeni Municipality.
The mayor, community and local volunteers identified a house which they renovated for Sikhakhane.
‘I thank the municipality, the mayor, councillors and the community for helping me and my family become proud homeowners.,’ said Sikhakhane after receiving the keys from Mayor Siphesihle Zulu.
‘The situation has been very difficult for me considering my disability, but I must mention that being disabled has not limited me in any way at all.
‘I run a small welding business and that helps put bread on my family’s table.
He said people and government should stop feeling sorry for people living with disabilities and rather seek ways to help small businesses prosper so that disabled people can provide for themselves.
There are many skilled artisans with disabilities who lack facilities for their day-to-day operations and we are urging the municipality to assist us.
Mayor Zulu said the main objective of this initiative is to ‘inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better’.
‘Small businesses have a major role to play in the South African economy in terms of employment creation and income generation,’ Mayor Zulu said.
