Valuable collection in eShowe
Alphaeus was the son of a member of King Cetshwayo's uVe Regiment.
MRS THOKOZILE Zulu, second wife and widow of Bishop Alphaeus Zulu, has given a large number of her late husband’s photographs to, the Bishop of Zululand.
This extremely valuable resource relating to the life and times of Bishop Alphaeus will remain in the custodianship of the present Bishop for about two years, after which he, together with Mrs Zulu and the late Bishop’s surviving children, will decide on a permanent place for them.
This will probably be the Killie Campbell Africana Library where many of Bishop Zulu’s papers are kept.
While in eShowe, some attention will have to be given to the photographs to ensure their archival integrity.
The photographs were delivered to Bishop Dino Gabriel by Richard Aitken who is working on a major study of the life and times of Alphaeus Zulu.
He regards Alphaeus as one the great South African thinkers of the 20th century.
Richard has, over a long period, amassed a large Alphaeus Zulu archive, which includes about 25 hours of taped conversations he had with Alphaeus from 1976 to 1978.
Born in 1905, Alphaeus was the son of a member of King Cetshwayo’s uVe Regiment, which saw active service at several battles of the Anglo-Zulu War, including Isandlwana.
During 1978, Richard was privileged to tour Isandlwana with Alphaeus who described to him the tumultuous events his father had taken part in.
