E-toll blunder for motorist

Bay man receives e-toll account statement for vehicle he de- registered 11 years ago

MEERENSEE resident John Harvey received a surprise electronic tolling (e-toll) statement recently for a vehicle he had deregistered 11 years ago.

He was also out of the country when the incident was logged.

Surprised that the registration was still linked to him, Harvey said when inquiring at the City of uMhlathuze’s traffic department, it was confirmed his vehicle had been deregistered and was not allocated to another motorist thereafter.

The vehicle was stolen and subsequently deregistered on 12 September 2002 in Empangeni.

‘I have not driven to Johannesburg in well over a year and at the time of the incident, I was out of the country on a trip in Argentina.

‘I will approach the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) and hopefully have the matter addressed,’ he said.

Meanwhile, in a media statement a week ago SANRAL Communications Manager Vusi Mona acknowledged that owing to eNaTIS system inaccuracies and vehicle owners not updating their data, some people were receiving invoices not meant for them or not receiving invoices at all.
