Suit up for safe cycling and running

Security expert shares safety tips with road cyclers and runners

CYCLING and running season is in full swing as ‘pedal pushers’ and the ‘takkie brigade’ prepare for the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour in March and Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon in April.

But with many athletes training in the early hours of the morning and in the evenings, ADT Security East Coast Region Managing Director Martin Kriel urges Zululanders to go ‘the extra mile’ for their own safety when they take to the road in the dark.

‘It is important to let someone know that you are heading out and when you expect you will return.

‘This means that if you are not home as scheduled, the alarm can be raised immediately and no time will be wasted in the event of an emergency.

‘Try to avoid running or cycling when it is dark outside and do not go out alone – invite family or friends to go with you.

‘Wear reflective clothing so that motorists can see you – reflective strips on your shoes are not sufficient.’

Kriel added that athletes must ensure their cellphone batteries are charged and that they have enough money on them to catch a bus or taxi if needs be.

‘Never go out running or cycling while listening to music through earphones as it prevents you from hearing an oncoming vehicle, a potential mugger or a vicious dog.

‘Also vary your route as often as you can to steer clear of very quiet or unsavoury areas.’

For the athlete’s family’s safety, it is also advised to make sure their home is safe while out, even if it is just for an hour or two.

‘Activate the alarm system and always ensure that you have locked the front door and gates properly behind you,’ said Kriel.
