Unsafe park must be cleaned

The park bordering Kelly Road is not only an eye-sore but unsafe too

USED needles, used condoms, empty wrappers, bank bags with marijuana, broken bottles and empty beer cans litter the park bordering Kelly Road in Empangeni and residents have had enough.

The problem, which has been going on for well over a year, has become such an issue that residents are too scared to walk past the park, never mind enter it.

A Empangeni resident, who asked not to be named in fear of victimization, explained how there are a number of vehicles who drive into the park illegally.

Evidence of drinking and drug abuse is clearly noticeable throughout the park and many residents in Kelly Road have had to secure their properties with razor wire, higher walls and CCTV.

‘I walk through the park on a daily basis and the smell of urine is over-powering. I have found needles, used condoms, broken glass and hundreds of cans and bottles,’ said the resident.

‘Most afternoons a crowd of men can be seen sitting under the trees or around a car, and when they leave, there is a pile of rubbish. I have complained to the municipality as well as the police, but nothing ever gets done about it. The park is an eye-sore and it is unsafe.’

City of Umhlatuze, Chief Communications Officer, Vukile Mathabela, when contacted about the matter, said the municipality will investigate and will take the necessary steps to clean up the park.
