Limited parking restricts business

Teanats in Domino building, Empangeni are not happy about a lack of parking

BUSINESS tenants in Domino Building, Kerk Street, Empangeni, are up in arms about the limited parking which they say is affecting their business.

With a number of businesses in the building, including Hollywoodbets, a pool-shop, a nail saloon, a dentist and a beauty salon, parking is limited.

Certain customers have made it quite clear they are not happy parking down the street then having to walk quite a distance to the shops according to the tenants.

They feel it is unsafe and for some, who are elderly, it is too great a distance to walk comfortably.

There are also safety concerns as cars who have to park on pavements and in the road, are being broken into.

Residents in the area are also angry about cars double-parking illegally as this is a danger to other motorists on the road.

‘At times two to three cars are parked abreast making it impossible to see approaching vehicles at the stop street,’ a concerned tenant explained.

‘Vehicles are also parking facing on-coming traffic which is also illegal and very dangerous.’

While some tenants are blaming other businesses for the problem, the fact is, there should be enough parking provided for all the businesses customers without one encroaching on another.

A meeting with the Body Corporate has taken place and solutions to the problem are in the pipeline.

The municipality has been approached with the aim of creating and demarcating new parking spaces in a safe area, as close to the businesses as possible.

A comment from the municipality has not been received at the time of going to press.
