For the love of science

There was no sleeping in class at the St Lucia Science Fair.

SCIENCE isn’t boring! This was the message to pupils from Mtubatuba schools visiting this week’s science fair at the St Lucia Town Hall.

Part of SAASTA’s National Science Week, the fair is a collaboration between Mangosuthu University of Technology and Thulani Sithole’s Insika Yentsha Yasemzansi (IYY) – a non-profit organisation (NPO).

Organisers aim to introduce the sciences and engineering to Grade 9 pupils who will shortly choose subjects for the rest of their school career, as well as show Grade 12 pupils their university options.

Mangosuthu University faculties present at the fair include engineering, natural sciences, chemical engineering, civil engineering, surveying, building, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, biomedical sciences, community extension and agriculture.

Professor of electrical engineering and Dean of the Engineering Faculty, Professor Malinga, co-ordinated the science fair with Thulani Sithole of IYY.

‘This is a science awareness campaign, so children can find out what science entails and can become more focused on the sciences,’ said Prof Malinga.

Throughout the week, pupils from numerous Mtubatuba schools will visit the fair for a day and be exposed to the sciences and potential science and engineering careers.

The idea is to enable Grade 9 pupils to make educated and informed subject choices, while Grade 12 pupils can weigh up their university options.
