KwaMsane cop arrested for helping criminals escape
Police officer arrested for allegedly assisting three suspects escape KwaMsane holding cells
A KwaMsane warrant officer was arrested on Friday for allegedly helping suspects escape from lawful custody.
He was arrested by the KZN Provincial Anti-Corruption team.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said three suspects escaped from holding cells at KwaMsane Police Station in February 2024 after cutting the steel burglar bars and the roof iron sheet.
“A month later, Sibusiso Gumede, one of those who had escaped, was rearrested at a roadblock in Vryheid.
“Police investigations revealed that Gumede and his two accomplices’ escape was orchestrated by a detective warrant officer who supplied them with a steel saw, allegedly after they paid him R5 000.
A warrant of arrest was issued by the court, and the police officer was duly arrested,” said Netshiunda.
The suspect is expected to appear before the KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 2 June, on charges of aiding and abetting suspects, defeating the ends of justice, and corruption.
