Empowering the unemployed at Zikulise

Local training centre empowers locals with skills.

AMID the growing number of unskilled and unemployed people, locals can now seek guidance at the Zikulise Community Upliftment Project in Empangeni.

‘When each skilled person in South Africa takes an unemployed individual under his or her wing and teaches them that skill, this may well be part of the solution South Africa needs now,’ said Executive Director Julie Jonson.

Jonson says the outbreak of xenophobic attacks was partly caused by desperate and unemployed individuals who feel they have no hope of improving their lives.

‘Through remaining jobless and believing that they have nothing to lose, they become part of these violent acts.’

Training centre

Zikulise opened its doors in 2004 and offers sponsored skills training, with a strong focus on successful entrepreneurship.

The skills training that individuals receive enhances their ability to become self-employed or gain employment to improve their lives and those of their families, and contributes towards the growth and sustainability of the economy.

‘We are committed to making a difference in the lives of our unskilled and unemployed community members,’ said Jonson.

Julie encourages community members to assist by teaching basic skills to those who have none.

‘If you are computer literate, teach an unemployed person who isn’t. They will be in a better position to gain employment,’ said Julie.

‘If you can cook, bake or sew, teach the skill to someone to help them earn an income. If you know how to repair a vehicle, do house maintenance and painting, make tables and chairs, teach an unemployed person the skill. It will help them either gain employment or start their own small business.’

Zikulise is now offering training instructions via email at no cost.
