More cattle killed on John Ross

Cattle roaming the John Ross Parkway have resulted in another collision

THE lack of control on wandering cattle has resulted in another collision on the John Ross Parkway.

Business Against Crime Manager Dave Whittaker was on his way home from Richards Bay when he struck a herd of cattle at the Alton traffic lights shortly after midnight on Saturday.

Whittaker hit one of the cows while approaching the intersection at a slow speed.

‘When I pulled over, SAPS officers immediately pulled up behind me to assess the damage,’ said Whittaker.

Moments later two more cows were hit by an oncoming bus. The cows were hardly noticeable to any of the drivers.

Another car later hit one of the injured cows.

‘We could not do anything, so I had no choice but to shoot two of the three cows at the scene.

‘It is just a miracle that none of the drivers were seriously injured.’

Both vehicles and the bus were badly damaged and repairs could cost them thousands.

‘This is a perfect example of how the municipality is failing in their duties,’ said Whittaker, who feels that the municipality is responsible for seeing that this does not happen.

‘Plans to open a pound to address this problem were allegedly in the pipeline, however never progressed.

‘Action should be taken and fences should be put up along the John Ross Parkway.

‘This is not the first time this has happened and definitely not the last.’
