UPDATE: Third operation for go-kart accident victim

Dujaan Dunn’s leg was mangled between the steel base of the go-cart and the gravel track and was dragged for almost 20 metres.

THE three year-old victim of a go-kart accident in Richards Bay has been discharged from hospital, but is scheduled for a third operation to repair extensive damage to his lower leg.

Dujaan Dunn suffered an open wound fracture and torn-off tendons after slipping off a kart at ‘Let’s go karting’ last month, and a second operation revealed that he will definitely need skin grafting.

Neil and Judith Dunn took Dujaan and his sister Juneril (4) on a family outing to the playground, but were giving several defective go-karts before the attendants reportedly suggested that Neil take a single kart and ride with Dujaan between his legs.

Dujaan’s leg slipped under the kart and was dragged several meters and badly mangled before his father could stop.

Judith says despite the traumatic injury and operations, Dujaan is doing well, thanks to tremendous support from family and colleagues.

‘He is not able to walk and he must be carried, although he is also managing by crawling, but he is brave and seems to be coping well emotionally.

‘The surgeon hoped that the wound would heal so that further operations will not be needed, but unfortunately the second operation revealed that skin grafting is inevitable and one tendon did not attach properly.

‘Only time will tell if he will regain full use of his leg.’
