Old photos show Zululand history

Take your old snaps to the Empangeni Museum on Saturday.

ZULULANDERS are invited to bring their old black and white snapshots, colour photographs and photo albums of family and friends to the Empangeni Art and Culture Museum on Saturday (16 May) between 9am to 12pm.

Professor JM Peffer from the University of the Witwatersrand will be at the museum, using these photographs to supplement research he is conducting.

‘My research involves looking at a person’s history through personal images of themselves,’ said Dr Peffer.

Special interest will be taken in photographs captured at the old Zululand Studios in Empangeni. Located downtown from the 1950s to the 1990s, it was a popular destination for people to show off their sense of style.

Also of interest is photographs taken of locals in other cities while working away from home.

If a sufficient number of photographs is submitted, an exhibition will be held to show the local history of the area through the many ways that locals once pictured themselves.
