Security guard secures honours degree

UNIVERSITY of Zululand security officer Ntombi Mathe (43) is a firm believer in reaching one’s true potential.

So she changed shifts to secure a better future for herself..

Graduating last week with an Honours degree in Public Administration and a Higher Diploma in Community Work at the university’s graduation ceremony, the security guard now has three qualifications to her name.

Shortly after being hired as a campus security guard in 2007, Mathe registered for her first degree and has now enrolled for her Masters degree with the hopes of soon completing her PhD.

The determined eMacekane mother of four said the past seven years had not been easy, but she persevered with support from her family.

‘Sometimes I would attend classes after working the night shift. I would be exhausted, but ambition ensured I never gave up.’ Ntombi said.
