German partnership for college

A German Dual Training System was recently introduced at uMfolozi TVET College in Richards Bay.

A GERMAN dual training system was recently introduced at uMfolozi TVET College in Richards Bay.

The uThungulu District Municipality and college management met with a German delegation to discuss a partnership that will assist the youth getting a foothold into the labour market.

A dual training system combines company apprenticeships with vocational education. It is practiced in several European countries, especially Germany.

The three-year partnership will focus on lecture development and training. It will also include a student exchange programme for civil engineering, building construction and agriculture programmes.

College Principal Sam Zungu said for the project to succeed it needs support from the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry and government.

‘We need to change the mindset about apprenticeship and encourage not only local companies, but government to assist. We cannot train these students in a vacuum, they need to be placed in these companies,’ said Zungu.

uThungulu District Mayor, Cllr Thembeka Mchunu, commended the college on the good work and welcomed the partnership.

‘I’m proud to have such an institution within the district. I encourage you to continue moving forward,’ she said.

Mchunu also touched on the newly established fresh produce market, which will concentrate in rural areas where there is vacant land.

‘We want to develop subsistence farmers so that they can also play their role in the economy.’
