Disaster Management team on alert as severe weather hits KZN

Richards Bay's fearless surfers are preparing for the monster waves expected from tomorrow.

DISASTER Management teams have been placed on high alert across the province.

This after coastal areas such as Durban and the Richards Bay have been cited by the South African Weather Services (SWS) to be likely to bear the brunt of the gale force winds expected tonight.

According to the SWS, high seas with wave heights from 6 to 9m are expected across the province’s coastal areas.

‘Our teams will be on high alert right through this week until these winds relent, we have seen in the Midlands that strong winds have caused major damage with tree being uprooted and ripping through roof tops. Our teams are on the ground and assessing damages that might have occurred,’ said KZN MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

She called upon residents to be cautious when starting fires.

Meanwhile, Richards Bay’s fearless surfers are preparing for the monster waves expected from Friday.

They are hoping a big swell will push through the harbour entrance channel, next to the South Pier.

In the past, similar weather conditions have created Hawaii-like waves of three metres and more in the channel.

Shipping traffic would be likely be suspended if those excessive southwesterly swell conditions occur.
