A ZULULAND nature lover, diver, registered veterinarian nurse and avid bird watcher, was enthralled when interesting and unusual guests, dropped in for lunch at her bird restaurant in Meerensee.
Sarie Killian spotted a male Cut-Throat Finch and two females dropping into her garden sanctuary and the guests snacked on a light lunch of seeds.
Her experienced eye spotted the rare celebrity trio and snapped them before they could fly off.
Johan Gouws, Chairman of Birdlife Zululand, says it was a remarkable spotting as these particular finches are not know to hang out in Zululand.
‘They are not an endangered species, but they usually keep to the Northern parts of the country.
‘According to my knowledge, it is the first time they have been spotted here.
‘Bird life is under tremendous pressure at the moment because of their shrinking habitat and food scarcity.
‘They often travel thousands of miles and once they reach their destination and they don’t find food, they die.’
But, the cuisine and accommodation in Zululand are good, so, with any luck, they will be easily be convinced to stay more permanently and maybe even raise a family.
