Educating locals on sustainable living

Amangwe Village is reaping the rewards from its organic food training program.

EQUIPPING the local community with gardening skills is one of the main aims of Amangwe Village’s management team.

The village’s Organic Food Garden Coordinator, Bongani Mthethwa, presented a five-day training course earlier this year with the intention of educating people on sustainable ways to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

Testimony to the success of this programme is shown through one of the flourishing gardens which was started and maintained by Prudence Mdinisa.

Pointing out the benefits of the programme, Amangwe Village Manager Erna Steynberg said, ‘Poverty can only be addressed if we all make an effort to share our knowledge and expertise with our neighbours.

‘Amangwe strives to strengthen and empower individuals such as Prudence to be change agents in their communities.

‘It is important for everybody to try make a difference in the next person’s life,’ she said.

The programme’s reach extends further, since Prudence now shares her organic gardening knowledge with her friends, family and other community members.
