Science expo appeals to corporates

Organisers of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists call on corporates to get involved.

THERE is a critical shortage of science skills in the region, and to a larger extent, this is now a national problem.

This was the main message communicated to local stakeholders at the Eskom expo, which was held at the UniZulu Science Centre.

Organisers of the expo used the information session as a platform to evoke the involvement of local corporates.

Emphasizing the shortage of science skills was the Science Centre’s Director, Derek Fish.

‘High school science is killing science, largely because these students are not doing experiments.

‘These expos allow students to be curious and experiment on anything.

‘We want children to get excited about science, and that happens at the expo, not in the classroom,’ he said.

The Science Expo’s Provincial Coordinator, Nalini Dookie urged the private sector to jump on board and become a role player in the initiative.

‘Right now, there seems to be a lack of interest in science among our youth.

‘Our country has low rankings when it comes to math and science, and that is why we should be moving in this direction.

‘We want to involve the members of the private sector because you have the practical knowledge that will assist these students.’

Local schools are encouraged to participate in the regional expo, which is planned to take place in August.
