Spend 67 minutes on the ZO line

Join the ZO’s ‘Hang out with Madiba’ campaign on 18 July.

WITH three weeks to go, the Zululand Observer is gearing to erect the longest charity washing line ever in Empangeni and Richards Bay on Saturday, 18 July.

Putting it all out on the line for charity, the ZO’s annual ‘Hang out with Madiba’ campaign on Nelson Mandela International Day gets underway from 8am to 1pm.

Washing lines will be erected in front of the newspaper’s offices in Empangeni (Baines Road) and in the open space between the Civic Centre and the East Central Arterial in Richards Bay.

Volunteers will be there to accept used or new clothing.

All you need to do is bring along packets of pegs to hang up your laundry of love, which will be distributed via the ZO’s charity arm – DICE (Do I Care Enough?) to needy organisations and disaster management units.

This year the ZO has again partnered with the City of uMhlathuze, via the uMhlathuze Community Tourism Organisation and the Rotary Clubs of Empangeni and Richards Bay to ensure that Zululanders devote 67 minutes of their lives in a novel and charitable way.

In its fourth year running, the initiative has seen hundreds of Zululanders peg up jackets, jerseys, scarves, beanies and blankets throughout the day.

Service clubs, school children and business owners are also invited to peg up donated items of clothing onto the extra-long washing line.

More than 2 000 items of winter clothing were collected in 2014 and the aim is to double the support this year.

See you at the ZO washing line next month.
